Traditional mom and pop stores and brick and mortars can’t afford to ignore what’s going on in the online space. As a big supporter of small businesses there isn’t a day when I meet a new business owner, restauranteur, or people in the services area that believe that they only thing they need to do to market their business is to turn on the lights to indicate to the world that they’re open for business.
Nothing can be so far from the truth…
Standing behind the cash register, giving amazing customer service and providing a great products isn’t enough, in fact, that should just be considered part of the brand experience. Whether you’re an owner of a neighborhood yogurt shop, cleaning service, an employment attorney, charter boat captain or a new plastic surgeon building your online presence should not be an after thought as much as a necessity.
Building a digital presence isn’t just for people who own and operate in the online space. Do you know what small business owners around the world have told me about building a social media platform? The feedback I generally get is that small business owners don’t feel the need to build social media pages and invest in SEO and paid social because of the following:
- They don’t need international exposure
- They don’t need or want to do business outside of their city
- They don’t need new customers
- They aren’t online retailers
- They don’t believe anyone reads online reviews while researching a business
- They’re just too small
While there are more reasons to cite, this is the feedback I get when interviewing clients for consultancy roles.
Do you know what I say to this?
You don’t know what you don’t know.
It’s crazy to think that these incredible small business owners don’t do their research and due diligence to figure out why so there are so many cool stories of entrepreneurs who have built brands solely on Instagram or from a youtube channel.
My advice to small business owners ready to take their business to the next level, is to start researching about how you can improve your brand with building a strong digital presence and how you can also strategically leverage your brand to create more business. Because if you aren’t doing this now, know that your competitors are.
